Todas las mañanas del mundo

Quignard, Pascal

In the spring of 1650, Monsieur de Sainte Colombe loses his wife and is left to care for his two young daughters. To increase his income, he decides to give viola da gamba lessons. Sainte Colombe lives isolated, locked in a cabin where he immerses himself in music to forget the death of his wife, and constantly perfects his instrument until he becomes the great teacher of his time. Not even Louis XIV's repeated requests inviting him to play at Versailles break his retirement. One day, the young Marin Marais asks him to accept him as a student. Sainte Colombe values his technique and gives him classes, makes him listen to the sound of the wind, and talks to him about the relationship between music and silence. Until he discovers that Marais has played in front of the king. Furious, Sainte Colombe breaks his student's instrument and expels her from his house. This is how two ways of understanding art confront each other: the musician who seeks glory in the heat of public favors and the one who conceives music as a priesthood, as a necessary and painful retreat to achieve the creation of the purest work of art. art. Marin Marais was Louis XIV's favorite viola da gamba and one of the most representative characters of the Grand Siècle. Even his first name and the dates of his birth and death are unknown about Sainte Colombe, and he did not publish anything during his lifetime. Forgotten for two centuries, it was not until 1973 that a notebook containing 42 of his concertos was discovered.
