Kawczak, Paul
One morning in September 1890, the Belgian surveyor Pierre Claes leaves Leopoldville heading north with a task commissioned by his king. With the stars as a guide and a few instruments, his mission is to trace the northern border of the Congo on earth, and thus, materialize what Europe called "progress" at the time, in the face of the barbarism of an unexplored, wild, magical and cursed land. at once. On board the Fleur de Bruges, gliding over the Congo River, he is accompanied by a very heterogeneous group, including Xi Xiao, a Chinese tattoo master who has visions of the future. Xi Xiao travels with two certainties: that colonization is an abomination will doom not only both but, in the long run, the Western world; and that his loyalty to the surveyor is above his own life.
