The flight attendant
Bohjalian, Chris
Cassandra Bowden knows hangover mornings well. She likes to have a few drinks every now and then and her job at the airline makes it easy for her to find new adventures, so having memory gaps seems inevitable; she lives with them, and also with the feeling of guilt that they carry. When she wakes up in a Dubai hotel room, she tries to piece together what happened the night before while she waits to catch a shuttle to the airport. She slides out of bed stealthily, trying not to make her already intense headache worse, and she looks at the man she has spent the night with. She gazes at his dark hair, his absolute calm... and blood, a pool of blood still wet on the white sheets. Fearful of calling the police, Cassie begins to lie. She lies by joining the rest of her classmates in the van; she lies during the flight to Paris, in which she takes care of the business class cabin; she lies to FBI agents in New York, who await her upon her arrival. Soon it will be too late to confess the truth, or to face what really happened in Dubai. Could she have killed him? And if it wasn't her, who did it?
