In this volume, Junji Ito displays his mastery in creating environments, as we see in The second-hand record, one of the author's favorites, where music becomes a spooky element. Other examples are The groaning pipe, a story that revolves around the disturbing noise of a drain, The smokers' club, where smoke is something fascinating that little by little takes over the whole story, or An unbearable labyrinth, in in which spirituality and claustrophobia come together to create a true nightmare.
