Székely, János

Béla comes to the world in the spring of 1913 in a village in the Hungarian countryside, a place where hunger is the punishment of every day. Shortly after giving birth, his mother, a young peasant girl, leaves him at the house of an old harpy, and it is his teacher who gives her his first books and tells him that beyond the town there is a city magic called Budapest. Years later, after arriving in the capital and employed as a bellboy in a large hotel, Béla attends during the day the spectacle of the profligacy of the wealthy classes, and at night returns to the periphery to share with his people the hardships of the proletariat. In the city his sexual awakening takes place, he flirts with the politics of the twenties and experiences the limits of misery, but, just turned eighteen, he wins his first game against fate.
