Te regalo un caballo blanco
Tena, Amalia de
In the dark Spain of the early sixties, the childhood of Ana de Sotomayor, the daughter of a family of landowners from Extremadura, passes happily until the family's ruin begins to hover over them. The big parties and long summer holidays will be followed by an empty fridge, the disappearance of pictures, crying and silence. With her particular way of interpreting reality, Ana tries to understand what is happening at home and justify the eccentric behavior shown by Luis, her father, since the tragic death of her only brother, José. What is it that drives you to cross out the faces of some people in her family photo albums? Why is there an empty hole in the shotgun cabinet in the office? What is the reason for the sudden dismissal of the nanny that Ana adores? Why doesn't her father talk about grandfather Pepe and forbids him to visit his great-grandfather Fanega? Despite everything, even in the most dramatic moments, Ana is able to make us smile with her witticisms and her sharp tongue. For Ana and her older sister, María del Mar, a time full of changes and anxiety will begin. Neither the months that Ana spends in Plasencia with her uncles plunged into longing, nor the transfer of the whole family to Seville manage to stabilize the turbulent family life, a situation that will end up leading to a serious crisis. Back in Mérida, Ana will try to escape from all this by taking refuge in the eccentric family of her best friend, Carlota García de Montenegro. Turned into a politically aware teenager, Ana will fall in love with a revolutionary and discover that family secrets buried for years have far more serious consequences than she ever dared to imagine.
