Taurinismo / antitaurinismo
un debate histórico
Badorrey Martín, Beatriz
The bullfights, since their origin, have been a controversial show that has aroused great passions for and against. Popes, theologians, monarchs and ministers tried to ban bullfighting events on various occasions and for different reasons: from the moral and humanist reasons alleged in the pontifical bulls of the 16th century, as well as the utilitarian, economic and labor arguments raised in Spain. of the Enlightenment, to the social, political and animalistic denunciations of recent centuries. The objective of this work is to show the main historical milestones of these two ways of seeing the same reality: the festival of the bulls. Of course, it is not easy to summarize such a long and intense controversy in a few pages, so omissions are required. In this study, the author has focused on the most important moments of the bullfighting / anti-bullfighting debate, either because of the quality of its protagonists, because of the forum in which it was developed or because of the brilliance of the arguments that, in some cases, have been and they are of a very high intellectual level. The historical journey can help us to better understand the current situation, because the debate is still open and society continues to be divided on bullfighting matters.
