Stitch
Stern, Richard
Seeking literary glory, Edward Gunther quits his job as a copywriter, sells everything he owns, and moves his wife and three children from Chicago to Venice. But success doesn't come painlessly or as quickly as he hoped. During his first month in Italy, Edward struggles to get his essays published, argues with his wife over family finances, and embarks on a rocky romance with poet Nina Callahan. Just when it seems his dreams will never come true, he discovers that Nina has befriended the famous Thaddeus Stitch, arguably one of the greatest sculptors of the 20th century. If anyone has the spark of genius, it's Stitch, and perhaps some of his creative energy will rub off on Edward, for whom the breath of such a luminary would mean everything. But the teacher is also in a vital impasse. Elderly and unable to accept that the world can go on without him, the artist feels that his time is running out and that his masterpiece -a sculpture set erected on an island in the lagoon- will also end up disappearing under the rising waters. of the Adriatic.
