¿Son demócratas las abejas?
la democracia en la época del coronavirus
Fornés, Antonio
Vila, Jesús A.
The fight against the pandemic has brought us face to face with a series of far-reaching political debates when democracy has not yet adapted to the technological society of the 21st century. We are experiencing exceptional circumstances such as the extension over time of measures to limit individual rights, the massive use of personal data by States to follow those affected -with the consequent threats to privacy-, the apparent faster speed of authoritarian regimes like China in stopping the spread of the disease, the valuation of "social discipline" as a virtue on the rise... Spurred on by these and other debates, the philosopher Antonio Fornés (author of Journey to Wisdom and collaborator of Radio Nacional de España) and the journalist and historian Jesús A. Vila have met in recent weeks a multitude of messages via email, as the closing of an epistolary exchange started months earlier as a result of their conversations about the future of democracy in a technological world, in which many thinkers glimpse the "end of history." During that crossroads the epidemic arose and they decided to turn their project around, also adding these new elements that oblige our democracies and western public opinion to define themselves already about the collective future we want. Through an antagonistic but mutually enriching debate, the book aspires to be a "preventive vaccine" for our democracy.
