García-Cortés, Chelo

When I was only eleven years old I lost my mother. That made me a rebellious and independent woman while I was still a child, and I had to face things that no one should face at that age. My childhood was difficult, but I also lived an exciting and fast-paced youth. I started working on the radio, where I met José Manuel Parada. We fell in love and moved to a modern Barcelona, ??which lived through a few tumultuous years but was the gateway to Europe. It was full of artists and people with new ideas, different from the one I had met in Madrid and Galicia when I was a child and a teenager. There I started working on the gossip press, which I fell in love with and am still very proud of. During those seventies, I experienced and learned to live in freedom, despite the fact that the Franco dictatorship had not yet ended. It was at that time that I discovered that I could love whoever I wanted, regardless of their gender. In a curious twist of fate, I fell in love with the most unexpected person. We are now married and have been together for more than thirty years. I have interviewed important artists who have later become friends, such as Bárbara Rey, Borja Thyssen, Carmen Cervera, Isabel Pantoja and a long etcetera. With my jump to television, my popularity grew. I have experienced many things, but it was not until I participated in the reality show Survivors for eleven weeks that I managed to reconcile with myself, with my story and with others under a beautiful starry night. When people think of me, they surely remember that phrase that Bárbara Rey pronounced live so many years ago: "Chelo, you and I have had a night of love". Or maybe they see me on the set of Save Me, dressed up as Amy Winehouse or even as a painting. But that's not the real Chelo. My story is much more complex and much more beautiful than that. And, above all, it is a story without labels.
