Robatori
Laestadius, Ann-Helén
Elsa is nine years old and belongs to a family of reindeer herders. One winter day, she sees how a man savagely kills Nástegallu, her reindeer baby, and threatens her not to say anything about it. When he finally gets the strength to explain it, the police dismiss the matter and classify it as a simple robbery. The killing of reindeer, however, is becoming more frequent, and the impact it has on the Sami population goes far beyond a material loss. Attacking the reindeer means attacking their entire culture. Elsa will turn this circumstance into her personal struggle and dedicate her life to defending what she loves most: her community, her family, her identity and her reindeer. Robatori is a bold statement towards a part of Sweden that is not usually talked about. A novel about how xenophobia, suicide, alcoholism and climate change threaten Sami culture, and about the tensions that unfold when modern ideas collide with a traditional culture that has deep-rooted patriarchal structures.
