Retrato del joven artista

"Portrait of the Young Artist" is Joyce's first novel. Published for the first time in the United States in 1916, its appearance marked a clear break with the dominant models in the narrative of its time, as well as a resounding announcement of the ambitious literary project that its author had begun two years earlier with the stories of "Dublinses" and that would culminate with "Ulysses" in 1922. The novel presents us with the life journey of Stephen Dedalus, an artist in training and a copy of Joyce, through an Ireland vividly and crudely portrayed as a polyhedral and contradictory reflection of modernity.
