República i guerra civil a Catalunya
dels fets d'octubre de 1934 a l'ocupació franquista i l'exili
Pagès, Pelai
The period of history that goes from 1931 to 1939, of Spain and also of Catalonia, was without any doubt one of the most important of our contemporaneity. It was the years in which the Second Republic was established, in two stages -the peace and the war- that had generated wide expectations among the popular classes: April 14, 1931 was a day of popular celebration as it was called. 'they have known very little in the course of history. From that same day, however, the monarchical sectors and some military began to conspire against the Republic, a conspiracy that -after the failure of General Sanjurjo's coup attempt in the summer of 1932- ended leading to the civil war of 1936-1939. The book deals with this period in three very specific parts. The stage of the Republic of Peace focuses on the importance of the events of October 6, 1934, to show that the proclamation of the Catalan State by Companys was accompanied by social actions that had as the protagonists were the Workers' Alliance and the various political formations that formed it. The civil war is treated from three aspects: the economic and political transformations and changes that took place when the war broke out; the internationalization of the civil war; and the role played by the Marxist Unification Workers' Party. Finally, the last part of the book is devoted to the Francoist occupation and the exile that thousands of Republicans carried out from 1939. In this way the book reviews the most significant aspects of the republican stage, focusing on lesser-known issues from a period that had begun with expectations of change, but ended with a dictatorship that lasted for nearly four decades.
