It is likely that nightmares are the experience that brings us closest to terror in our daily lives and this volume contains several examples, such as the fear of being locked in a place from which one cannot escape in The Alley, the anguish caused by mazes in An unbearable labyrinth, or the panic of falling into the void in Falls. It includes, among other stories, The Bully, where a cruel girl dedicates herself to mistreating a friend of hers, and A Deserter at Home, a story of revenge, set in the post-war period and inspired by the life of Anne Frank.
