Schnitzler, Arthur
A young Viennese doctor attends a carnival ball with his wife, and a breath of adventure, freedom and danger blows around them. The following night, she confesses to having been unfaithful in her mind with another man. Disturbed by this revelation, the protagonist goes to the bed of a dying patient. He walks the night streets with wandering thoughts and is immersed in a world of barely glimpsed secrets, in a game of mirrors between reality and fantasy, between death and desire. Meanwhile, his wife sleeps, and dreams wicked dreams. The Austrian writer and physician Arthur Schnitzler scandalized the society of his time with the description of eroticism and adultery. His books were burned by the Nazis in 1933, being considered an example of bourgeois moral decay and corruption.
