Fernando de Herrera was one of the first Spanish writers to formally celebrate the Battle of Lepanto. The immediacy and public impact of the event, as well as the absence of Castilian texts that would have tackled it with sufficient performance, were the causes that the poet put forward to justify writing the work. Herrera intervened here and there throughout the book to account for his work as a historian, but he also acted as a man of letters, so that this work became an official reference for the Hispanic monarchy. The authors who dealt with the battle in subsequent years repeatedly resorted to the discourse constructed by Herrera, either as a source of information or as a literary model.
