Quiero ser negra
Krog, Antjie
I want to be black articulates in its chapters three different motives whose relationship grows and intensifies as we read it. The first deals with violence and police repression, also citizen violence, in the South African country. In the second, Krog tells the story of King Moshoeshoe I, and with him the story of Lesotho, the condition of its customs, the nature of its values, so different from those of the West. Third, the author's own life in Berlin, her awareness of European life, of Western culture, of a completely different world, and the need to integrate into the society to which she belongs: I want to be black is a desire that fails to satisfy, but that is on the horizon of its existence.
