Querido Callo

Querido Callo

Kominsky-Crumb, Aline

Around 1970, the city of San Francisco and its surrounding areas became the epicenter of the underground comix movement. In that environment, in which a new way of making comics was promulgated and cartoonists spoke openly about sex, drugs or mental health, the strips of Callo, the autobiographical character of Aline Kominsky, shone with their fascinating irreverence. All of them are gathered in this volume. For the first time, desire, the relationship with one's own body or the insecurities of "being a woman" were treated in a crude and unfiltered way. El Callo is cheeky and funny, self-destructive and over the top. But it also reveals an author full of life, confident in the honesty of her art and ahead of her time, capable of mixing the contradictory nature of sexuality with a complex and proud feminism. Without asking anyone's permission, she opened the door to another way of doing comics.
