Qué fue de los Mulvaney
Oates, Joyce Carol
The Mulvaneys are an example of a happy family. The father is a handsome, hard-working, and sensible man; the mother, a charming and talkative woman, and the children, Mike, Patrick, Marianne and Judd, the finishing touch to an idyllic marriage. They live in High Point Farm, a dream farm that will be their hell from Valentine's Day 1976, when a dark event completely changes Marianne's life, and the Mulvaneys begin their decline. The narrator of the story is Judd, a journalist and the youngest of the children, who reveals the truth about his family and an entire country. Intimate and at the same time epic story, What Happened to the Mulvaneys is enjoyed like a good piece of jazz: a recurring, almost obsessive motif, it expands, changes its tone, and by changing it offers us always new facets of a reality that we already thought we knew . When we finish reading it, the Mulvaneys stay with us, as often happens with certain melodies that are already part of our lives.
