One morning in 1484, a pirate galley attacks the village of Llafranc. Ramón Serra dies defending his family, but his wife and his daughter are kidnapped. In his agony he asks his son Joan: "Promise me you will be free". Joan, aged twelve, flees to Barcelona, an initially hostile city. There he meets Anna and works as an apprentice in the Corró bookstore, whom he comes to love like his new parents. These are turbulent times, of wars and revolts, and the Inquisition changes his life dramatically. Sardinia, Sicily, Naples, Rome and Genoa will be the scenes of the odyssey that Joan will live to be able to rescue his family, recover the woman he loves and become a bookseller.
