The times to come will be radically different from what we have lived through up to now, but they will be very similar to other stages in history. This is the main conclusion reached by expert investor Ray Dalio, after a titanic study of episodes similar to the present in the last five hundred years: historical cycles have always been very similar to each other. After his world bestseller Principles, Dalio returns with a new book, in which he discovers the cycles that explain the rise and fall of great empires, such as the Dutch, the English and the American. In our days, apparently, we are witnessing the decline of the United States, and the progressive rise of China as a dominant power. If we pay attention to these "signs", interpreted under a comparative analysis with previous historical periods, we are at the gates of the birth of a new world order. In this book we will find a global overview of the forces that have historically driven the success of countries and their subsequent decline. History repeats itself, Dalio maintains, in an "archetypal Great Cycle": all the new empires have experienced a phase of leadership, peaceful growth and prosperity; a loss of competitiveness and productivity, with a crisis resulting from over-expansion; and a period of decline, in the form of loss of financial power, internal conflicts, and wars or revolutions. All these "signs", which we can also identify today, herald the consecration of the new world power, restarting the "Great Cycle" again.
