Darwish, Mahmud

Mahmud Darwish is one of the most important figures in contemporary Arabic literature. Considered the poet of the Palestinian people, he composed a poetry with a strong ethical and political commitment, which knew how to sink its roots in the Arab tradition while addressing the social urgencies of the present and the conflicts typical of historical modernity. The two books that this volume brings together synthesize the overcoming tension that characterizes the whole of Darwish's work. Between the ancient and the modern, the local and the universal, the song and the fight, the epic and the lyric, "Why have you left the horse alone?" It supposes, according to the author's own, a personal and poetic autobiography, since it contains biographical and stylistic traits of his entire career, while "Siege status" represents the effort to capture a present demolished by bulldozers.
