This is not a book on the history of Spain, although it is based on historical facts. It is not a memoir, although it is inevitably colored by the experience and personal memory of those who lived through that period as a front-row witness. Nor is it exactly a political essay, but it includes a handful of reflections matured over the years, also useful for understanding the present. Under the slogan For change, the communication team in which Ignacio Varela participated condensed the spirit of Felipe González's PSOE, and the gale of expectations raised around his figure. Of all the electoral campaigns in which Varela has participated, that of 1982 was the most exciting, due to its historical significance, of which the entire country was keenly aware. It was a historic campaign. But that overwhelming success can only be understood by tracing its origins in the aftermath of Francoism. In this book, Ignacio Varela reconstructs the steps of the political protagonists of that time and explains how Felipe González refounded a party that was irrelevant in exile and non-existent in the interior to turn it into the most formidable electoral steamroller of democracy. A story that accounts for the network of relationships, rivalries and power struggles that marked the Spain of the Transition and forged the Spain of today.
