Pechos y huevos
Kawakami, Mieko
On a sweltering summer day, Makiko travels to Tokyo to visit her sister Natsu. Unable to accept the changes in her body after giving birth, Makiko is obsessed with the prospect of undergoing breast augmentation surgery. Meanwhile, her twelve-year-old daughter Midoriko lives paralyzed by the fear of approaching puberty and feels unable to express herself beyond through a notebook. For her part, Natsu is thirty years old, an aspiring writer, and struggles with her own indeterminate identity of being neither a "daughter" nor a "mother." Reunited in a working-class neighborhood in Tokyo, they will spend a few days together in which Midoriko's silence will be a catalyst for them to confront their fears, many of them imposed largely by being a woman in today's society, and their family secrets. Sponsored by Haruki Murakami and Elena Ferrante, Mieko Kawakami has become an international literary phenomenon and combines comedy and realism in these pages to paint a portrait of contemporary working class femininity.
