Gurnah, Abdulrazak

When twelve-year-old Yusuf's parents tell him that he will be living with his uncle Aziz for a while, the boy is excited. But what Yusuf does not know is that his father has pawned him to pay off an unpayable debt, nor that Aziz is not his relative, but a rich and wealthy merchant with whom he will travel through central Africa and the shores of the Congo on the eve of the first world war. Through the eyes of that little boy we will discover an exuberant and hostile nature, populated by ruthless tribes and heartless invaders, in which a human life is worth as much as a few drops of water.
