When an apparently healthy young woman suddenly collapses on the New York subway and dies on arrival at the hospital, her case is attributed to an aggressive form of the flu. Until she ends up on the autopsy table of veteran forensic doctor Jack Stapleton, who discovers some surprising anomalies: the young woman had undergone a heart transplant and, furthermore, her DNA matches that of the organ received. After two other victims die similarly withering deaths, Jack begins to fear that the city is facing an unprecedented pandemic.
