Palomar

Calvino, Italo

In the same way as the observatory that bears his name, Mr. Palomar looks at and analyzes the world. Mr. Palomar watches and thinks while he seems to do nothing, but an incessant activity, which translates into an evolution of his thinking about the world, bustles inside him. Palomar's experiences consist of concentrating on small objects and phenomena through whose meticulous analysis he will find a relationship between the object and the universe, or between the self and the universe, because this is reflected, verified and multiplied in everything that around us. It's all the same and it's all part of the same. The sea, the sky, the stars, a meadow, a small cheese on a supermarket shelf, the bloody marble of a butcher shop contain questions about existence. Palomar's itinerary towards wisdom recreates a story in which the anonymous life of the protagonist stands as an example of the dizzying inner journey that very few dare to undertake.
