Padres e hijos

Padres e hijos

Compton-Burnett, Ivy

Three generations of the Sullivan family, worn out artistcrats, share a seemingly arcadian and self-enclosed life in a large house in the English countryside. Apart from the little daily discussions, nothing disturbs an existence as undramatic as the friendly landscape that surrounds it. Until, with a sudden and ironic narrative turn, a small family tragedy with an unexpected outcome unleashes tensions that, even politely expressed, reveal a surprising background of selfishness and pettiness. In the large fresco of characters, the children stand out above all, and especially the squat Nevill, an ineffable anarchist who barely knows how to speak but who is already capable of giving more than one lesson to the grown-ups. They are the ones who, innocence lost, are capable of the greatest cruelties under their grave and even inane appearance.
