O lo uno o lo otro
Batuman, Elif
It's 1996 and Selin is embarking on sophomore year as a Harvard literature major. Although summer is behind her, she can't stop thinking about what happened during those months in Hungary with Ivan, the boy she is in love with. The latest emails they have exchanged do not make it clear on what terms their relationship is now, and although in literature she enjoys complex stories starring women condemned to tragedy, in real life she would prefer not to become one of them. Month by month Selin builds her future as a writer at Harvard, taking authors like Kierkegaard and André Breton as a reference to find some kind of transcendence in university life: parties, alcohol and -above all- sex. Only one trip to Russia will open up a new world of refreshing possibilities for her, as she watches as she drifts further and further away from her only two friends.
