O ano das mazás

It is the time of the post-war period, a time of misery, a time of uneasiness. The boys scratched in the garbage of the rich houses to find the skins of the potatoes, which they then boiled and ate eagerly. Now, even that, there are no more mundas because the rich throw them away, they save them for dinner with a pinch of oil. This is not the case in Vilaveiga - a dying mountain village -, where they have full-water apples to give relief to bandits of people and animals: reinetas, cider apples, scratched, with beak, without beak, yellow, green and even golden, which are not indigenous, but Andrés "o Parviño" laughs at them with pleasure. After a while, a series of events begin to happen in the village that make even the earth tremble: Henrique "the weirdo" brings with him a selection of books, a family of Protestant heretics rents the big house, and Adelaida, a little girl with anemia, learns to read...
