Nueva historia de la España contemporánea (1808-2018)

This is a new history of contemporary Spain, seen in all its political and cultural diversity. The volume is structured around three axes that intersect and between which there are constant mutual references. The first part consists of seven chapters defined by chronology, which provide the basic historical narrative. It is followed by a second, more analytical part, divided into thirteen chapters on specific topics that cover the entire period 1808-2018: the economy, nationalism, gender relations, lifestyles, the empire and the colonies, culture, intellectual life, social movements, religion, the State, war and the military or the politics of memory and transitional justice. The third part brings together fifteen brief biographies of representative figures from the political and cultural world. Thus, a human dimension is added to the story with illustrative examples of the problems previously narrated, with details, nuances and complexities that are not addressed in the other chapters. The authors, all of them first-class specialists, come from various historical fields, as befits the thematic plurality of this work, as well as from different countries, Spain, Canada, Great Britain, the United States, France or Israel, which also ensures the diversity of approaches. They do not belong to the same historiographical school nor, of course, do they share any political orientation, but rather express a great diversity in their intellectual formation, experiences and points of view. Thanks to this tripartite structure and such a varied choice of authors, the book offers an innovative vision, richer and more nuanced than usual, of an exciting and complex national history that was always also European and global.
