Nosotras, enfermeras
historias de unos días que nos cambiaron para siempre
Castiñeira, Héctor
This is the story of a nurse who fought coronavirus on the front lines, armed with a garbage bag and a repurposed mask. But, in reality, it is also that of all the male and female nurses who stood up to the virus, those whom society called heroes, and for whom they applauded at eight o'clock, while they and they lived with fear glued to their backs . It is the testimony of their tears, fears and sacrifices, and at the same time of the immense happiness they felt every time they turned off a respirator and released a patient. "The first patient I treated with COVID-19 was on March 5, 2020. I think this will be one of the dates that I will remember all my life. Until that day, until the moment you have a person in front of you infected with the virus that is causing so much havoc, my colleagues and I kept thinking that it would not touch us. I suppose that one, as a defense mechanism, tends to deny reality until it is two meters away and with a laboratory report with the word POSITIVE written in capital letters. Despite everything, and although the cases in Italy were already in the thousands, we continued to cling to the fact that that day in our country the confirmed numbers barely exceeded two hundred and on the floors of my hospital cases did not even reach half a dozen. We could not even imagine that we would end up admitting, in our unit alone, more than three hundred patients in just two months. That in all of Spain there would be more than two hundred and fifty thousand confirmed cases, that In just three months, more than fifty thousand colleagues would be infected or that would leave us forever more than 28 thousand people according to official data. With this book I intend to capture, in the most faithful way possible to reality, all the stories that occurred during these months so that, despite the passing of the years, they are not lost in oblivion, rewritten or blurred. Thus, those who have not lived it so closely, may be more aware of what happened. "
