Noches blancas en Valdelago
Bouchet, Michel-Henry
Valdelago has been for centuries a closed world, in the middle of a valley bordered by an immense glacial lake, Lake Sanabria. Its mythical origin lies in the punishment meted out by a beggar who was denied hospitality and who flooded the gorge to wash away the sins of a ruthless and greedy population. In the mid-20th century, during the rapid industrialization of Francoist Spain, a dam burst upstream and swallowed the population, while the tragedy was used by the regime to cement national unity after the Civil War. All we know about Fidel, haunted by loneliness and the nostalgia of an ephemeral exile in Cuba in search of a chimerical wealth, are the testimonies collected by the narrator, but also the letters written to his two daughters and never sent. These letters break the tacit silence about Fidel's suicide, to reveal the deep conviction of his murder.
