Oates, Joyce Carol
John Earle McLaren, "Whitey", an affable sixty-seven-year-old man who was once the popular mayor of Hammond, witnesses an altercation between the police and a dark-skinned young man who has been arrested for no apparent reason. Morally compelled to intervene, the two officers lash out with such unusual force that Whitey dies of a heart attack. This final heroic act opens the door to a much darker reality in the McLaren family, whose five children will face their grief by revealing their prejudices, grudges and insecurities: from racist disdain for the mother's new partner to sibylline strategies to get their hands on the lion's share of the inheritance. Beneath a façade of respectability lie rotten foundations, which may cause the family home to collapse.
