Salama Kassab was a pharmacy student when the cries for freedom began to break out in Syria. She still had her parents and her older brother; she still had her house...she had a normal teenage life. Now, Ella Salama volunteers at a hospital in Homs, helping the wounded who walk through its doors daily. Secretly, however, she is desperate to find a way out of her beloved country before her sister-in-law, Layla, gives birth. So desperate that she has manifested a physical embodiment of her fear in the form of her imaginary companion, her Khawf, who hounds her every move in an effort to keep her safe. Ella salama must face bullets and bombs, military assaults and her changing sense of morality before she can finally live in freedom. And when she least expects it, she crosses paths with a boy who changes everything and her doubts invade her again... should she leave her home?
