In 2017, during a wave of sexual assault allegations against powerful men, Vanessa Wye finds herself embroiled in controversy. Her former literature teacher, Jacob Strane, has been accused of sexual abuse by another former student. The scandal triggers Vanessa's multitude of memories of the time she spent at Browick, an idyllic boarding school in Maine, when she was fifteen years old. There, in her precocious and ambitious student days, she had an affair with the magnetic Professor Strane, who succeeded in persuading her of the irresistible effect she had on him. Now, nearly two decades later, Vanessa is faced with an impossible choice: shut up and convince herself that her relationship with Strane was consensual, or face the trauma that marked her adolescence and try to rebuild her life.
