This book is the compilation of the chronicles that Carmen Laforet wrote recounting her long journey through the United States in 1965, invited by the State Department. As she herself explains in the epilogue, "From the notes taken on trains and hotel rooms this book emerged. From the first impression fresh and alive with unknown landscapes and people and environments...". The result is a delightful text in which she describes, without pretense, what she observes with the eyes of a traveller. We trust that, as Agustín Cerezales Laforet comments in the prologue, "Sixty years later, many things have changed in the world. Others, for better or for worse, not so much. Today's North Americans and Spaniards, reading this book, we may learn something about ourselves".
