When Jamaica Kincaid received the news that her younger brother, Devon, was suffering from AIDS at the age of thirty-three, she traveled to Antigua to care for him during his final months. The news came from a family friend, since she and her mother had stopped talking. Until that moment, Jamaica did not even know that her brother was homosexual. Since his birth, Devon had been a source of trouble for the family: at fourteen he had been involved in a murder, later joined the Rastafarian sect, and had also been a drug addict. Jamaica, however, had become a famous writer based in the United States and, now, she returned to a strange world steeped in distance, both from her relatives and from her origins.
