Metamorphosis
Riverola, Emma
The perfume of a liquid city, which seems to float, is the aroma that surrounds us while reading this novel. History of the convulsed Barcelona in 1937 and of the world today, Metamorphosis is the echo of past wars and the tears of the current ones. But also a novel about those women who are transformed over the years, motherhood and guilt. For this reason, when Lali, after a traumatic experience in the army, returns to her family home, she clings to the shelter where she lives. But the meager peace, never real for herself, dissipates as soon as she receives a peculiar commission: to restore the perfume of her former neighbor, Roser, who died during the Civil War. She soon finds that everything smells like a swamp and that nothing is what it seems, because there are unfathomable secrets of the soul that, sometimes, are written down. And then her real life is intermingled with that other past that she is not able to ignore: Roser's letters to Mercè Rodoreda, the abandonment of a son, death, the stench of death. Because the war arrives, present and past, and with it the betrayals, the hidden politics, the planes and the bombs.
