Memorias de una ladrona

Maraini, Dacia

Teresa Numa, the protagonist of the novel, lives off what she manages to steal. Her story unfolds (first in Rome and then throughout Italy) in unhealthy pensions, third-rate cinemas, criminal asylums and women's prisons, where Teresa makes friends with swindlers, prostitutes and professional pickpockets, while remaining a simple person. , cheerful and, in its own way, honest. Her experiences -narrated in the first person- make it possible to humanize the lumpen, understand the origins of marginality and draw a line of sanity between crime and necessity. In Teresa's world, violence and abuse are the order of the day: love has a price; sex is currency and there is no work for anyone. However, in the midst of this hostile scenario, Teresa will be able to extract from her destiny moments of poignant sincerity, bits of goodness drowned out by time and the circumstances that she lived through.
