"Mascaras" is the main novel with which Leonardo Padura presented the policeman Mario Conde in the nineties. The novel manages the dichotomous structure of power/subversion or concealment/unmasking at different levels. The most immediate is that of the police plot: Conde has to investigate a possible murder. The second level is that of the relationship between the characters outside the investigation. The third consists of the intertwining of life and the police plot with literature. The last level is the one that represents the entire Cuban society, which tries to survive through concealment and simulation.
