Neuroscience Ph.D. student, Gifty explores behavior in mice to investigate the workings of the neural circuits of depression and addiction, two illnesses that have wreaked havoc among loved ones: His brother, Nana, was an athletic promise that He died years ago of a heroin overdose following an ankle injury and dependence on OxyContin, while his mother has fallen back into severe depression. Although Gifty is determined to discover the scientific basis that lies in family suffering, she comes across again and again the religious faith and values of the Evangelical Church that marked her childhood, a world whose promise of salvation remains so tempting as unattainable.
