Mareas

Mareas

Martínez de Lezea, Toti

Women have been and are protagonists in many novels by Toti Martínez de Lezea; most of them, women ignored by History with a capital letter. About our men: fishermen, whalers, adventurers, merchants, Indians, the Vikings who came to our coast, the jauntxos and their factional fights... we have heard or read countless stories, but hardly anything about our women. Mareas recovers the memory of the women of the Basque coast, so forgotten and so present throughout the History of our town. Thirty-five stories in which they are the protagonists, arranged chronologically and set in coastal towns, from Baiona to Muskiz. Innkeepers, slaves, widows, smugglers, businesswomen, raped women, healers or bateleras, among others, make up a range of very different characters and situations over twenty centuries, which Toti Martínez de Lezea has been able to recreate with his usual mastery.
