Why have people from different cultures and times created myths and stories with similar structures? What does this similarity tell us about the mind, morals, and the make-up of the world? In this exceptional work, the author answers the pressing question of why we are capable of doing evil (even in heinous cases like Auschwitz and the Gulag), but unlike most psychologists and philosophers, he does so by putting himself in the place of the potential executioner instead of that of the victim.
