Malpaís

Lladó, Albert

"Barcelona burns from time to time. You'll soon realize". Thus begins the new novel by Albert Lladó. In October 2034, in a Catalonia recently self-proclaimed as an independent State, an event shakes the city and the country. Few people know the background of such an unexpected and irreversible event. Through two main characters -Chantal and Felipe Soto-, the author weaves a plot where History in capital letters -the one that defines the canons of politics, literature and philosophy- dialogues with the most particular and intimate history, without that none of its protagonists can declare themselves innocent before the chronicle of the facts. Overcoming their old wounds, the characters try to escape the ghosts of the past, while surviving between political activism and the inevitable corruption of power. Chantal and Felipe Soto embody two conceptions of how to pursue their own ideals and commit to their time, in the search for an emancipatory truth that is not satisfied with dogma or obedience. Malpaís is, therefore, the chronicle of an immediate future, a narrative about how tenderness and violence can sometimes become confused, and where beauty and destruction are part of the same conflict, always alive, always incandescent.
