Madame de Staël

Sciara, Giuseppe

Madame de Staël (1766-1817) is a central figure in understanding the political thought of the late 18th century and the intellectual atmosphere that paved the way for the Revolution in France. She is a writer and salonnière, exiled by the Bonapartist regime, some of her works, such as Considerations on the French Revolution or Ten Years of Banishment, have risen as classics of modern political literature. With this book, Giuseppe Sciara takes us into the "first life" of Madame de Staël, between 1788 and 1803, a time in which she played a fundamental role on the public scene and wrote almost all of her political texts. Five intense decades, full of struggles and humiliation for being an intelligent and ambitious woman, but above all five decades of extremely sharp reflections on political and constitutional matters. Five decisive decades in French and European history and of which Staël was a witness and protagonist of the first order.
