The easiest and most comfortable thing would have been not to write this book. For quite some time I have considered the possibility of keeping it in a drawer whose key will be inherited by future generations. If I have decided to publish it, it is because I believed that its content could be useful not only to better understand the past and the present, but, especially, to prepare us for the future. However, just because it is useful and positive does not mean that it is free of some of the bitterness that we all would have wanted to save ourselves: it is not a white story, nor a conformist nor lacking in self-criticism. It is a story narrated in some moments with a live voice, like an almost live narration. Finally, these pages that you will read, if you have the kindness to do so, ask for a dose of indulgence and generosity, since, despite the honesty and unquestionable sacrifice of all, in some passages of this story we did not end well. Me neither, of course.
