Rika, the protagonist of this novel, is a newlywed who tries in a humble way to correspond to the image she has forged of marital happiness, but it doesn't take her long to realize that there is nothing to share between her and her husband. To get out of that nothing that her life has become, Rika only sees one option: reintegrate into the world of work, achieve some economic autonomy, as well as some social life. She gets a job at a bank to sell savings deposits to a very particular clientele: older people whose trust must be earned by regularly visiting their homes and accepting their invitations to share a moment of conversation over a cup of tea. When a young man bumps into her at her grandfather's house, Rika has already tipped into a true addiction. That ordinary woman will end up conceiving and carrying out one of the biggest bank frauds of the time. Mitsuyo Kakuta explores in each of his novels the effects of contemporary society on female psychology. His heroines are unforgettable precisely because they are so close: a sum of feelings, often complex, and at the same time the product of circumstances and events that are always unpredictable.
