Climber wants to leave the streets of New Orleans, where she has been struggling for a long time to survive. She wants to take flight, and to do so, she has drawn up a plan that involves securing a place aboard the Midnight Thief, the notorious smuggling aircraft. Climber knows that she will only succeed if she gains the trust of her captain Ann-Marie, and the opportunity presents itself when she discovers that a Haitian scientist has been kidnapped and that his abduction is related to The Drums of the Black God, a powerful and mythical weapon. But that is not the only secret that Climber guards: when she was a child, Oiá, the African goddess of wind and storm, deposited her powers in her. Now, the goddess has plans of her own for Climber and Ann-Marie.
