Los silencios de Hugo

Chacón, Inma

November 1996. Olalla has been missing for twelve hours and her absence makes no sense to anyone. It is not like her to be so long without advising where to locate her, especially now, when her brother is torn between life and death, waiting for an experimental treatment that could save him. Everyone is looking for her, but no one can find her. But how did Hugo get to that hospital and why has Olalla disappeared? With agile and accurate prose, Inma Chacón weaves a story marked by silences: that of Hugo, who kept his illness a secret for years, and that of Olalla, afflicted with polio, who always tried not to protest and now does not answer calls from theirs. Silence also forms the backbone of all Hugo's relationships with his surroundings: with Olalla, whom he feels he has to protect, especially from himself; with his friend Manuel, from whom she decides to move away without any explanation after living with him in his revolutionary times; with Helena from whom he flees despite being in love with her; and with Josep, Olalla's husband, with whom she is, she maintains a happy marriage until Hugo's secret comes to light. The novel is also a deep love story in all its aspects; a journey through the recent past of Spain, full of contrasts and chiaroscuro, and, above all, a tribute to life and the ability of human beings to move forward.
